Upgrading to macOS Tahoe? If your MacBook is slow, draining battery, or the update is stuck, this hands-on guide shows the real fixes our iFix pros use daily from Safe Mode to Spotlight rebuilds and Bluetooth resets.
Quick Fixes: First 5-Minute Checklist
Restart your MacBook & plug in power, then retry the action.
Free 25–40GB of storage (updates/indexing need headroom).
Update again (Apple typically ships rapid point fixes).
Boot in Safe Mode (disables extensions/login items), then test.
Check Activity Monitor for apps taking all your power.
Pro tip: Tahoe is the last major macOS for Intel Macs, so some older apps and drivers lag behind so expect a patch or two.
Common macOS Tahoe Problems on MacBooks (and Proven Fixes)
Here are the top problems the iFix pros are seeing with our customers. Some will be easy fixes but others may require some expert assistance.
Installation Stuck at “Preparing” or Endless Spinner
We had one customer complain that it looped for over an hour. Once we cleared the catalog and hooked up a wired ethernet it completed the install in one pass. Here are the steps we took:
Quit the installer and remove cached files if prompted.
Clear the softwareupdate catalog, reboot, retry:
sudo softwareupdate --clear-catalog && sudo softwareupdate --reset-ignored
Ensure 35GB+ free space and a stable network (prefer Ethernet for reliability).
MacBook Suddenly Slow/Hot After Tahoe
An M2 Air came in “too hot after Tahoe.” We found a menu bar add-on pegging 90% CPU; uninstalling + reducing motion solved it.
Give it 24-48h to finish indexing (Spotlight/photos can take a long time).
Reduce Transparency/Motion if animations stutter.
Trim Login Items, uninstall legacy kexts; update GPU/audio drivers (vendor updates).
If fans roar constantly: full shutdown, wait 30s, restart (resets power management on Apple silicon).
Battery Drain After Update
Open Activity Monitor, find the apps using the most power (“hogs”), quit them now, and stop them from auto-starting.
Calibrate behavior: full charge, normal use, one full cycle, recheck in 48 hours. Tahoe guides document frequent post-upgrade drain complaints.
Bluetooth & Audio Not Working
Try this (in order):
System Settings, Bluetooth: toggle Off/On. Sound, Output: select the right device.
Forget & re-pair Bluetooth devices.
Reset the stack:
sudo pkill bluetoothd
Then reboot.
Remove the Bluetooth plist and reboot:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Spotlight Finds Web, Not Files
Rebuild index:sudo mdutil -Ea then sudo mdutil -i on / and wait to finish.
Then give it time to complete. You can also force a rebuild via System Settings, Siri & Spotlight, Spotlight Privacy (add, then remove your disk).
Apps Crash or Look Wrong (UI / Extensions)
Update the app; replace any kernel extensions with updated system extensions.
If Intel-only plugins fail, check for Apple Silicon builds or Rosetta compatibility notes.
Test in Safe Mode; clear app caches/preferences if needed. Third-party app compatibility is a top Tahoe complaint.
Liquid Glass UI: Prefer the Old Look?
It is not an issue, but we have customers complaining about the liquid glass distracting them during work. Turning off transparency will help you fix that by following the steps below:
Reduce Transparency & Motion (Accessibility) for crisper text and a snappier feel.
Try minimal menu-bar setups if the full-glass effect feels “too big.”Multiple Tahoe roundups cite mixed reception to the new design language.
When to Downgrade to Sequoia (and When Not To)
Downgrade if mission-critical tools don’t work yet (LTS plug-ins, enterprise VPN).
Otherwise, wait for .1/.2 point releases as most early bugs get fixed by Apple eventually.

FAQs
Why is my MacBook hot after macOS Tahoe? Indexing, heavy login items, or incompatible menu utilities. Use Activity Monitor → Energy, remove hogs, and reduce transparency/motion.
How long should indexing take? Anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on storage size/speed and photo libraries.
Is Tahoe safe for Intel Macs? Yes but Tahoe is the last major feature update for Intel. Security updates continue; some older apps may need updates.
